DMACC volleyball team upsets 12th-ranked Hawkeye CC, 3-0

 

Freshman Kylie Welch of Davenport had 12 kills and freshman Anna Niehaus of Carroll added nine to lead the DMACC volleyball team to a 3-0 upset of Hawkeye Community College (HCC) February 7 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Set scores were 25-19, 25-19, 25-19.

 

HCC came into the match at 5-0 and ranked 12th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

 

Welch, who also had two ace serves, hit .344 in the win, getting her 12 kills from 32 attacks with three hitting errors. Niehaus got her nine kills from 28 attacks with one hitting error. As a team, DMACC hit .344 with 40 attacks from 119 attacks with three hitting errors.

 

Freshmen Elizabeth Pierce of Altoona and Morgan Tupper of Nevada combined for 35 assists in the win with Pierce getting 18 and Tupper coming away with 17.

 

Defensive specialist freshman Rachel Eddy of Dubuque led DMACC in digs with 19. Pierce added 17, Welch finished with 12 and sophomore Jordan Neely of Tiffin had nine. Sophomore Katelyn Courtney of Ames topped DMACC in blocks with five, including three block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team goes after its second consecutive upset of a ranked team Feb. 9 when the Bears face North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) at Mason City. The Trojans are 2-2 and are ranked 18th in NJCAA Division II.
