DMACC women's golf team completes play in national championship
  • DMACC finishes 54 holes with 1,165 strokes
  • The Bears were the 16th best team in the tournament
  • Sophomore Krista Swenson of Story City leads DMACC with a three-round total of 280

The DMACC women's golf team has completed play in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's National Championship May 10 to 13 at Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club in Ormond Beach, Fla.

The Bears were unable to complete the 72-hole tournament on May 13 after the committee made the tough decision to inactive a cut after 54 holes. The decision was made because of rain delays during the second and third rounds.

The decision resulted in only the top 15 teams moving on to the fourth and final round. DMACC was in 16th place prior to the cut and had a 17-stroke advantage over Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) rival Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC).

"We are happy to have been given the chance to play 54 holes because we weren't sure that would happen," DMACC women's golf coach Chris Seaboch said. "An uncharacteristically tough first day put us in a tough position. I'm very proud of the girls. They played better each day. I am glad to have passed Iowa Lakes on the third day. It shows the resolve the girls had going forward."

DMACC began the tournament with a 408 and the Bears completed play in 19th place, two strokes behind ILCC. DMACC shot 382 on the second day and jumped to 17th place, but fell further behind ILCC, which posted a 378 in the second round. The third round saw the Bears get even better, shooting a 375 to ILCC's 398 and that round moved the Bears into 16th place.

DMACC was led by sophomore Krista Swenson of Story City. Swenson shot 99, 90 and 91 over the par 72 layout for a 54-hole total of 280. Sophomore Aubrey Duncan of Columbus Junction finished with a 283 on rounds of 99, 92 and 92 and sophomore Lydia Steier of Granger posted scores of 96, 99 and 92 for a three-round total of 287. Sophomore Emily Knoche of Iowa City rounded out DMACC's performance with a 315 total on rounds of 114, 101 and 100.

Place finishes were unavailable for those individuals who did not advance to the fourth round.

Seminole State College (SSC) took the team championship with a 1,198, 45 strokes ahead of runner-up Daytona State College (DSC). SSC's Minori Nagano was the tournament medalist with a 5-under-par 283. She shot rounds of 72, 70, 66 and 75.
