DMACC women's golf team places second in CBC Mustang Invitational
  • Sophomore Krista Swenson of Story City leads DMACC with eighth-place finish
  • Sophomores Lydia Steier of Granger and Aubrey Duncan of Columbus Junction finish in the top ten
  • All five DMACC golfers place in the top 20

The DMACC women's golf team came away with a second-place finish in the Bears' season debut in the CBC Mustang Invitational March 15 and 16 at the Country Club of Arkansas in Maumelle, Ark.

Williams Baptist University (WBU) won the team championship with a two-day total of 687 and DMACC finished second at 742. The Bears opened with a 369 and shot 373 the second day. WBU's Emma French took medalist honors with rounds of 83 and 78 for a 36-hole score of 161.

DMACC women's golf coach Chris Seaboch said he was pleased with his team's performance.

"When you look at the scoring for the women, it wasn't where it was in the fall, but what we noticed is that it was almost all short game stuff," Seaboch said. "We were really pleasantly happy with how they struck the ball getting off the tee and how they managed the golf course. Each girl was probably just six or seven shots off of their fall average and we know we can make those shots up."

DMACC was led by sophomore Krista Swenson of Story City. She shot scores of 85 and 95 for a two-day total of 180, placing eighth in the individual competition. Sophomore Lydia Steier of Granger and freshman Aubrey Duncan of Columbus Junction finished ninth and tenth respectively. Steier posted scores of 93 and 91 for a 36-hole score of 184 and Duncan shot rounds of 94 and 92 for a 186.

Sophomore Emily Knoche of Iowa City and freshman Quinn Eslinger of Afton rounded out DMACC's performance, finishing 17th and 20th respectively. Knoche shot rounds of 97 and 95 for a192 and Eslinger posted scores of 99 and 98 for a 197.

Seaboch said Swenson is expected to lead the Bears this spring.

"She really played well for us (in Arkansas)," Seaboch said, adding that Swenson was hampered by COVID-19 during the fall season. "She's come out looking really good. Lydia led us last year and she was a little rusty. Her swing looks good, but the contact wasn't quite where we wanted it. Aubrey hit the ball really well and just lost a lot of strokes chipping and putting like the rest of the girls."

Seaboch said that his team being able to use the golf facilities in the new addition to the DMACC gymnasium during the winter has really helped.

"The girls swings looked really good coming out and our distance off the tee was good," Seaboch said. "It's just the little things we have to work on."

The DMACC women's golf team will host the DMACC Invitational March 5 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.
