Loss to ICCC ends season for DMACC women's basketball

The 2023-24 season came to a close for the DMACC women's basketball team when the Bears fell to Iowa Central Community College (ICCC), 92-70, in the semifinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI-A Women's Basketball Tournament March 2 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears, led 19 points from sophomore Hallie Mohr of Mediapolis, closed at 20-11 after suffering losses in their last four games.

 

DMACC trailed 18-8 midway through the first quarter before righting the ship and coming away with a 31-27 lead at the end of the quarter. But the Bears went scoreless through the first five minutes of the second period as the Tritons regained the advantage and led the rest of the game. They were up 49-41 at halftime and 71-56 at the end of the third quarter.

 

Sophomore Reanna Hutchinson of Eau Claire, Wis., joined Mohr in double figures with 13 points and sophomore Jaden Ainley of Clear Lake had nine points.

 

DMACC, which defeated the Tritons twice during the regular season, shot 35 percent in the loss, making 27 of 78 field goal attempts, including 10-of-31 from three-point range. The Bears were 6-of-11 from the free throw line.

 

ICCC, which will face Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in the Region XI-A championship game tonight at Cedar Rapids, shot 56 percent, hitting 35 of 63 field goal attempts. The Tritons were 9-of-19 from three-point range and 13-of-17 from the free throw line.

 

DMACC came away with a 38-31 advantage in rebounding with Mohr, Ainley and freshman Joy Beran of Riceville collecting seven rebound apiece to lead the Bears. Sophomore Kennedy Jones of Oak Park, Ill., dished out a team-high six assists and Ainley and freshman Mary Walker of Fonda led the way in steals with two apiece.

 

The ICCC-KCC winner advances to the NJCAA 2024 Division II Women's Basketball Championship March 18 to 23 at Joplin, Mo.
