Hutchinson leads DMACC women's basketball past GVUJV, 83-62

 

Sophomore Reanna Hutchinson of Eau Claire, Wis., led four players in double figures with 25 points as the DMACC women's basketball team handed the Grand View University Junior Varsity an 83-62 loss February 11 at Des Moines.

 

Hutchinson got her 25 points from 11 field goals in 17 attempts, including 3-of-6 from three-point range.

 

Sophomores Jaden Ainley of Clear Lake and Rebekah Fuller of Bondurant scored 14 and 10 points respectively and freshman Mary Walker of Fonda had 11 points as the Bears improved to 18-7 for the season.

 

DMACC, ranked 18th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and playing its final nonconference game of the season, needed a 30-point third quarter to take control of the game. The Bears led 19-18 at the end of the first quarter and 40-36 at halftime. They outscored the Vikings 30-12 in the third period to open up a 70-48 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

 

DMACC shot 47 percent in the win. The Bears were 34-of-72 from the field, including 5-of-15 from three-point range, and drained 10 of 14 free throw attempts.

 

Sophomore Hallie Mohr of Mediapolis grabbed nine rebounds and freshman Joy Behan of Riceville came away with eight as DMACC grabbed 50 rebounds in the game. Hutchinson and Ainley had six rebounds apiece and freshman Eviyon Richardson of Waterloo finished with five. Ainley and sophomore Kennedy Jones of Oak Park, Ill., led the Bears in assists with four apiece and Hutchinson and Ainley led the way in steals with three apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play Feb. 13 when the Bears are home to Southwestern Community College (SWCC). DMACC is 13-2 in conference play and SWCC is 8-18 overall and 6-10 in the ICCAC. The Bears were 64-56 winners when the two teams played Jan. 10 at Creston.
