Hutchinson leads DMACC women past NECC, 86-66

 

Sophomore Reanna Hutchinson of Eau Claire, Wis., scored a team-high 28 points to lead the DMACC women's basketball team to an 86-66 win over Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) January 22 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Hutchinson drained 11 of 13 field goal attempts, including four of six three-point attempts, and was 2-of-5 from the free throw line as the Bears improved to 12-7 overall and 8-2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Freshman Eviyon Richardson of Waterloo and sophomore Jaden Ainley of Clear Lake helped DMACC's cause with 17 and 15 points respectively.

 

DMACC, ranked 18th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) after receiving votes in the previous poll, started slowly and trailed 21-20 at the end of the first quarter. The Bears took control of the game midway through the second quarter and outscored the Hawks 27-15 in the period for a 47-36 lead at halftime. DMACC was up 74-51 at the end of the third quarter.

 

The Bears shot 42 percent from the field, hitting 27 of 64 field goal attempts, including 6-of-21 from beyond the arc. They were 26-of-34 from the free throw line.

 

Ainley came away with another double-double with 10 rebounds as DMACC controlled the boards, 55-23. Richardson had nine rebounds, sophomore Kennedy Jones of Oak Park, Ill., had seven, Hutchinson grabbed six and freshmen Joy Beran of Riceville and Mary Walker of Fonda had five apiece.

 

Richardson, Ainley, Jones, sophomore Rebekah Fuller of Bondurant and freshman Niya McGee of Waterloo had two assists apiece and Jones and Hutchinson led the Bears in steals with two apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team travels to Keokuk Jan. 24 to face Southeastern Community College (SECC). The Blackhawks are 4-11 overall and 1-7 in the ICCAC.
