DMACC women's basketball team drops 77-30 decision to KCC

 

The DMACC women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 77-30 loss to Kirkwood Community College (KCC) February 23 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears finished at 14-16 overall and 6-14 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

KCC, the No. 1 team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, led throughout the game. The Eagles were head 18-9 at the end of the first quarter, 40-9 at halftime and 55-21 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC was led by freshman Payton Tahahwah of Tama with seven points. Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Magan Christopherson of Milford added six points. The Bears shot just 24 percent in the loss, making 10 of 42 field goal attempts. They were 1-of-19 from three-point range and 9-of-12 from the free throw line.

 

KCC had a 36-35 advantage on the boards with freshman Reagan Franzen of Polk City and CoFR Camry Jones of Okoboji leading DMACC with seven rebounds apiece. Tahahwah dished out a team-high five assists and she and CoFR Lexi Branning of Manning had two steals apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Southwestern Community College (SWCC) in a play-in game in the NJCAA Region XI Division II Basketball Tournament Feb. 27 at Creston. DMACC and SWCC split their two-game series during the regular season, each winning on their home court. SWCC finished the regular season at 6-23 overall and 6-14 in the ICCAC. The DMACC-SWCC winning will play KCC in quarterfinals March 2 at Cedar Rapids. KCC is the tournament's No. 1 seed.
