Four DMACC women's basketball players earn postseason honors

 

Four members of the DMACC women's basketball team have earned postseason honors from the Iowa Community College Athletic Association (ICCAC).

 

Sophomore Jada Powell of Des Moines and freshman Grace Flanagan of Coggon were named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI All-Region First Team and Flanagan was named Newcomer of the Year. Freshman Magan Christopherson of Milford was named to the second team and freshman Emily Caspers of Swaledale received honorable mention recognition.

 

Powell averaged 8.4 points and a team-high 9.9 rebounds a game for the Bears. She scored 169 points and shot 42 percent from the field, making 69 of 163 field goal attempts. Powell was 2-of-11 from three-point range and 29-of-49 from the free throw line. She was DMACC's top rebounder with 199 rebounds, including 120 defensive rebounds. Powell's season also included 22 blocked shots, 17 assists and 16 steals.

 

Flanagan led the Bears in scoring with a 16 point average. She scored 352 points on 45 percent shooting, hitting 119 of 265 field goal attempts. Flanagan shot 47 percent from three-point range, making 62 of 133 attempts, and was 52-of-61 from the free throw line. Flanagan also led DMACC in assists with 66 and had a 1.8 assist to turnover ratio. Her season also included 97 rebounds, including 73 defensive rebounds, a team-high 77 steals and two blocked shots.

Flanagan was second in the ICCAC in steals and free throw percentage and was fourth in three-point shooting and scoring.

 

Christopherson scored 320 points on the season, averaging 14.5 points a game. She shot 37 percent from the field, making 106 of 289 field goal attempts. Christopherson was 48-of-143 from three-point range and 60-of-81 from the free throw line. Her season also included 101 rebounds, including 81 defensive rebounds, 59 assists, an assist to turnover ratio of 1.0, 23 steals and three blocked shots.

 

Caspers finished second to Powell in rebounding with 159 rebounds, including 82 defensive rebounds, averaging 7.2 rebounds a game. She scored 186 points and averaged 8.5 points a game. Caspers shot 53 percent from the field, making 80 of 152 field goal attempts. She was 26-of-49 from the free throw line and ended the season with 22 steals, 17 assists and six blocked shots.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team ended the season at 15-7 after losing to Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in the championship game of the NJCAA Region XI-B tournament. The Bears were ranked as high as 11th in the NJCAA Division II basketball rankings.
