DMACC women's basketball team tops SECC in regular season finale, 48-32

Freshmen Grace Flanagan of Coggon and Emily Caspers of Swaledale scored 10 points apiece as the DMACC women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 48-32 win over Southeastern Community College (SECC) April 3 at West Burlington.

 

The Bears ended the season with a 14-6 record and will take the No. 1 seed into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI-B tournament that begins April 6. DMACC will face North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in the semifinals inside the DMACC gymnasium. The DMACC-NIACC winner will play either Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) or SECC in the championship game April 10 at the home of the highest seeded team still playing in the tournament. DMACC swept its season series against NIACC and SECC and split a pair of games against ICCC, each winning on the road.

 

The Region XI-B champion advances to the NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship April 20 to 24 at Port Huron, Mich.

 

DMACC, ranked 17th in the NJCAA Division II poll, had little trouble in its win over SECC. The Bears led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, 31-15 at halftime and 40-25 at the end of the third quarter. Freshman Magan Christopherson of Milford added nine points for the Bears.

 

DMACC shot 35 percent in the win, making 19 of 55 field goal attempts. The Bears were 5-of-18 from three-point range and 5-of-11 from the free throw line.

 

Freshman Camry Jones of Okoboji pulled down 11 rebounds to lead DMACC to a 46-38 advantage on the boards. Christopherson and sophomore Jada Powell of Des Moines had six rebounds apiece and Caspers and sophomore Shamir Brown of Tuscaloosa, Ala., came away with five apiece. Christopherson dished out a team-high three assists for the Bears.

 

DMACC's wins over NIACC during the regular season included a 71-49 decision Jan. 23 at Mason City and an 84-49 victory Feb. 13 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
