  • NECC takes 12-9 lead in the first quarter and pulls away the rest of the game
  • Loss ends three-game winning streak for the Bears

The DMACC women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end March 24 as the Bears dropped a 75-54 decision to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) at Norfolk, Neb.

Freshman Grace Flanagan of Coggon scored 11 points and was the only DMACC player to score in double figures as the Bears, ranked 12th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, fell to 13-4 for the season.

NECC led throughout the game. The Hawks were up 12-9 at the end of the first quarter, 29-18 at halftime and 54-39 at the end of the third quarter. The win avenged a 75-57 loss to DMACC when the two teams played Feb. 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

The Bears shot just 31 percent in the loss, hitting 19 of 61 field goal attempts. They were 5-of-19 from three-point range and 11-of-18 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Jade Powell of Des Moines had 11 rebounds to go with seven points as NECC came away with a 40-33 advantage on the boards. Flanagan and freshmen Magan Christopherson of Milford and Jensen Archibald of Martensdale led DMACC in assists with two apiece and Flanagan had a team-high six steals.

The DMACC women's basketball team will play Kirkwood Community College (KCC) March 27 at Cedar Rapids. The Eagles are ranked second in the NJCAA Division II poll and are 17-1 this season. Their wins include a 70-63 decision against DMACC Jan. 20 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
