Christopherson's 20 points lift DMACC Women's Basketball team past SECC, 84-64

Freshman Magan Christopherson of Milford led four players in double figures with 20 points as the DMACC women's basketball team handed Southeastern Community College (SECC) an 84-64 loss March 20 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshmen Emily Caspers of Swaledale and Grace Flanagan of Coggon added 16 and 14 points respectively and sophomore Jada Powell of Des Moines picked up a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Bears improved to 13-3 for the season with their third consecutive win.

 

DMACC, ranked 12th in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), trailed 18-15 at the end of the first quarter and 35-34 at halftime. The Bears put the game out of reach by outscoring the Blackhawks 33-16 in the third quarter for a 67-51 advantage at the end of the period.

 

DMACC shot 48 percent in the win, draining 31 of 65 field goal attempts. The Bears were 6-of-22 from three-point range and 16-of-21 from the free throw line. Nine of Christopherson's 20 points came on three-pointers where she was 3-of-7.

 

Powell's 10 rebounds led DMACC to a 41-31 advantage on the boards. Caspers and freshman Lexi Branning of Manning had five rebounds apiece and freshman Emma Jacobsen of Adel came away with four. Flanagan dished out a team-high seven assists and sophomore Shamir Brown of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and freshman Jensen Archibald of Martensdale had three assists apiece. Flanagan also led the Bears in steals with six and Archibald had five. Freshman Camry Jones of Okoboji recorded two blocked shots.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) March 24 at Norfolk, Neb. NECC is 11-7 this season, including a 75-57 loss to the Bears when the two teams played Feb. 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
