DMACC's Jada Powell named ICCAC Athlete of the Week
  • Powell averaged 11.5 points and 10.5 rebounds a game in two DMACC wins
  • The sophomore from Des Moines ranks second in the ICCAC in rebounding
  • Powell shoots 67 percent from the field in the two wins

 

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC women's basketball player Jada Powell the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II women's basketball for the week of March 8 to 14.

 

Powell, a sophomore from Des Moines, is the second DMACC women's basketball player to be honored by the conference this season. Freshman Grace Flanagan of Coggon received the honor for the week of Jan. 25 to 31.

 

Powell helped the DMACC women's basketball team to wins over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) and Ellsworth Community College (ECC) during the week, averaging 11.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in the two wins. She scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 61-52 win over ILCC on March 10 and tallied 13 points with 11 rebounds in a 68-62 win over ECC on March 13.

 

Powell made five of eight field goal attempts and had eight defensive rebounds in the win over ILCC and was 5-of-7 from the field with seven defensive rebounds in the win over ECC.

 

Powell is averaging 8.2 points and 10 rebounds a game for the Bears this season. She is shooting 39 percent from the field, having made 50 of 130 field goal attempts. Powell is 2-of-11 from three-point range and 21-of-31 from the free throw line. She has 150 rebounds, including 87 defensive rebounds. Powell's season includes 19 blocked shots, 13 assists and 15 steals.

Powell's 10 rebounds a game rank her second in the ICCAC in rebounding.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team, 12-3 and ranked 12th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, are home to Southeastern Community College (SECC) March 20. Game time is 1 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. SECC brings a 3-13 record into the game.
