Freshman Grace Flanagan of Coggon scored 14 points and freshman Magan Christopherson of Milford added 14 as the DMACC women's basketball team overcame deficits of 20 points in the first half to defeat Southwestern Community College (SWCC), 77-68, March 3 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears started slowly and trailed 20-13 at the end of the first quarter. They fell behind by 20 points twice in the second half, 33-13 and 35-15, before cutting the deficit to 41-27 at halftime. DMACC outscored the Spartans 33-13 to open up a 60-54 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Bears used a 19-5 run in the third quarter to draw even at 46 and controlled the tempo the rest of the way.

 

DMACC, ranked 11th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, shot 45 percent, hitting 29 of 65 field goal attempts. The Bears were 9-of-26 from three-point range and 12-of-17 from the free throw line. Flanagan led DMACC in three-point shooting, making five of six attempts.

 

Freshman Lexi Banning of Manning had nine rebounds, leading DMACC to a 37-35 advantage on the boards. Sophomore Jada Powell of Des Moines had eight rebounds to go with eight points and freshman Emily Caspers of Swaledale came away with six rebounds.

 

Flanagan and Powell had three assists apiece and Powell finished with three blocked shots. Flanagan and Christopherson had two steals each.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team is home to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) March 6. Game time is 1 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. IWCC is 12-2. The Reivers defeated DMACC, 90-57, when the two teams played Feb. 20 at Council Bluffs.
