Freshman Grace Flanagan of Coggon scored 16 points and sophomore Jada Powell of Des Moines had a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds as the DMACC women's basketball team handed Marshalltown Community College (MCC) a 76-53 loss February 25 inside the DMACC Gymnasium.

 

Flanagan's 16 points came from 4-of-7 shooting from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point range. She was perfect at the free throw line, making all six of her attempts.

 

Freshman Emily Caspers of Swaledale joined Flanagan and Powell in double figures with 11 points as the Bears defeated the Tigers for the second time this season, sweeping the two-game series.

 

DMACC, ranked 12th in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), led throughout the game. It was 21-6 at the end of the first quarter, 38-17 at halftime and 57-38 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 44 percent in the win, hitting 30 of 69 field goal attempts. The Bears were 5-of-21 from three-point range and 11-of-17 from the free throw line.

 

Powell's 15 rebounds lifted DMACC to a 44-34 advantage on the boards. Caspers had seven rebounds to go with her 11 points and freshmen Camry Jones of Milford and Lexi Banning of Manning had six rebounds apiece.

 

Flanagan also led the Bears in assists with four and freshman Jensen Archibald of Martensdale added three. Caspers came away with four steals and Flanagan and Powell had three apiece. DMACC had a 20-4 advantage in steals.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team is idle until March 3 when the Bears host Southwestern Community College (SWCC). Game time is 5 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. DMACC came away with a 75-59 win when the two teams played Feb. 10 at Creston.
