Loss to IWCC ends eight-game winning streak for DMACC women's basketball team

The DMACC women's basketball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end behind a 90-57 loss to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) February 20 at Council Bluffs.

 

The Reivers, who improved to 9-1 with the win and are not ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I poll, led throughout the game. They had a 25-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, were up 57-22 at halftime and held a 70-39 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC, ranked 12th in NJCAA Division II, fell to 8-2 for the season.

 

The Bears were led by freshman Grace Flanagan of Coggon with 20 points. Freshman Magan Christopherson of Milford also reached double figures with 13 points. Sophomore Jada Powell of Des Moines narrowly missed double figures with nine points and led DMACC to a 37-32 advantage on the boards with 10 rebounds.

 

DMACC shot 33 percent in the loss, hitting 18 of 54 field goal attempts. The Bears were 7-of-17 from three-point range and 14-of-22 from the free throw line. Flanagan accounted for four of DMACC's seven three-point baskets with four in six attempts. She also had six rebounds and led the Bears in assists with three and in steals with five. Christopherson and sophomore Shamir Brown of Tuscaloosa, Ala., had five rebounds apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team is home to Marshalltown Community College (MCC) Feb. 25. Game time is 5 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. MCC is 1-6 this season. Included in those six losses is an 88-41 setback to DMACC when the two teams play Jan. 27 at Marshalltown.
