Big Second Half Leads Bears to Eighth Straight Win

Freshman Magan Christopherson of Milford scored 17 points as the DMACC women's basketball team won its eighth consecutive game, a 75-57 decision over Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) February 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshman Grace Flanagan of Coggon and sophomore Jada Powell of Des Moines joined Christopherson in double figures with 17 and 12 points respectively. Powell recorded a double-double as she pulled down 13 rebounds to go with her 12 points. Her total included seven offensive rebounds.

 

DMACC, ranked 12th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), trailed most of the first half, including 16-14 at the end of the first quarter and 32-28 at halftime. The Bears put the game away behind a 31-point third quarter, leading 59-46 at the end of the period. They pushed their advantage to as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter.

 

DMACC shot 43 percent in the win, hitting 27 of 63 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-21 from three-point range and 11-of-17 from the free throw line. Christopherson and Flanagan paced DMACC in three-pointers with four apiece. Flanagan got her four three-pointers from five attempts and Christopherson was 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.

 

Powell's 13 rebounds lifted DMACC to a 50-36 advantage on the boards. Christopherson and freshman Emily Caspers of Swaledale had nine rebounds apiece and Flanagan came away with seven. Christopherson also led DMACC in assists with six and Powell and Flanagan led the way in steals with two each.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team puts its 8-1 record on the line Feb. 20 when the Bears face Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) at Council Bluffs. The Reivers, an NJCAA Division I program, are also 8-1 but are not ranked in NJCAA Division I.
