Christopherson's 18 points lift DMACC women's basketball team past NIACC, 84-49

Freshman Magan Christopherson of Milford led five players in double figures with 18 points as the DMACC women's basketball team defeated North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), 84-49, February 13 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Freshmen Jensen Archibald of Martensdale and Emily Caspers of Swaledale scored 12 points apiece, freshman Grace Flanagan of Coggon had 11 and freshman Camry Jones of Milford came away with 10 as the Bears recorded their seventh straight win and their second of the season over NIACC. DMACC defeated the Trojans, 71-48, Jan. 23 at Mason City.

 

DMACC, ranked 14th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), led throughout the game. The Bears were up 19-13 at the end of the first quarter, 38-20 at halftime and 67-31 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 43 percent in the win, making 36 of 84 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-36 from three-point range and 4-of-12 from the free throw line.

 

Sophomore Jada Powell of Des Moines led DMACC to a 71-27 advantage in rebounding with 22 rebounds, including 13 offensive rebounds. Powell tied DMACC assistant coach Jocelyn (Anderson) Kovarik for third place on the all-time list of most rebounds in a game. Former DMACC All-American Carlee Schuhmacher tops the list with 28 rebounds against NIACC on March 7, 2014 and she pulled down 23 rebounds against Ellsworth Community College (ECC) on Feb. 28, 2014. Jones had 10 rebounds against NIACC and Caspers pulled down eight. Flanagan dished out a team-high six assists and Powell topped the Bears in blocked shots with three and in steals with three.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team is home to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) on Feb. 17. Game time is 5 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. NECC is 5-2 this season.
