Freshman Riley Gatton of Montezuma led five players in double figures with 12 points as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team leveled its record at 7-7 with a 76-46 win over Southeast (Neb.) Community College (SENEB) December 14 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

Sophomores Asia Mena of Chicago, Ill., and Hannah McKinney of Des Moines and freshmen Jada Powell of Des Moines and Katelyn Courtney of Ames also reached double figures with 10 points apiece in the win, which avenged a 78-72 loss Nov. 8 at Columbus, Neb.

DMACC opened up a 19-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and had a 43-22 advantage at halftime. The Bears stretched their advantage to 63-36 at the end of the third quarter.

DMACC shot 38 percent in the win, connecting on 32 of 85 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-40 from three-point range and 4-of-8 at the free throw line.

McKinney and Powell recorded double-doubles with 10 rebounds apiece as DMACC lost the rebound battle, 52-50. Courtney and freshman Shamir Brown of Tuscaloosa, Ala., had six rebounds apiece. Mena led the Bears in assists with four and freshman Katie Scott of Polk City added three. Gatton topped DMACC in steals with four and sophomore Bethany Evans of West Des Moines, Mena and Powell had three steals apiece.

The DMACC women's basketball team is idle until Jan. 8 when the Bears face Southeastern Community College (SECC) in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) matchup at Keokuk. DMACC is 1-1 in conference play. SECC is 7-6 overall and 0-2 in the league.
