Atwood's 19 Points Let DMACC Women's Basketball Team Upset SCC

Sophomore Beth Atwood of Packwood scored 19 points as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) women's basketball team upset Southeastern Community College (SCC), 73-61, January 20 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

SCC entered the game ranked 15th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). DMACC has received votes in the poll but is not ranked.

 

Sophomore Molly Mitchell of Okoboji and freshman Grace Stalzer of Zearing also reached double figures in the win as the Bears improved to 15-4 overall and 3-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Mitchell scored 11 points and Stalzer finished with 10.

 

DMACC led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter, and then outscored SECC 25-5 in the second period to open up a 40-19 advantage at halftime. The Bears led 59-34 at the end of the third quarter.

 

DMACC shot 55 percent in the game, hitting 31 of 56 field goal attempts, including 5-of-14 from three-point range. The Bears were 6-of-15 from the free throw line.

 

Atwood recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds as DMACC came away with a 42-27 advantage on the boards. Mitchell narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds and Stalzer and sophomore Regan Shockley of Hartley had five rebounds apiece. Shockley and sophomore Joniqua Clark of Cedar Rapids led the Bears in assists with four apiece and Clark topped the team in steals with three.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will face Southwestern Community College (SWCC) January 24 at Creston. SWCC is 6-10 overall and 0-3 in the ICCAC.
