DMACC men's golf team finishes eight in national championship

 

The DMACC men's golf team came away with an eighth-place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Championship May 23 to 27 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

 

The Bears shot 301 in their final round and finished the 72-hole tournament with 1,200 strokes. They were six strokes in front of Heartland Community College (NCC) and two strokes behind Glendale Community College (GCC).

 

Kirkwood Community College (KCC) claimed its first national title with 1,168 strokes. The Eagles finished eight strokes in front of Parkland College (PC).

 

Warner Beach of GC won medalist honors with a six-under-par 282 over the 72 holes.

 

Sophomores Sam Vertanen of Ames and Ethan Gillis of Pickering, Ontario, Canada, led DMACC with a tie for 27th place. Both shot 76 in the final round and completed 72 holes with 300 strokes. Both were one stroke shy of earning All-American honors.

 

Freshmen Spencer Clatt of Gilbert and Kaleb Allen of West Burlington tied for 30th and 38th respectively. Clatt posted a 75 in his final round and tied for 30th with 301 strokes. Allen posted a 76 and tied or 38th with 302 strokes.

 

Freshman Calvin McNeeley of Pleasant Hill rounded out DMACC's performance with a tie for 70th place. McNeeley shot a team-best 74 in the final round and finished the tournament with 313 strokes.
