DMACC men’s golf team finishes seventh in national championship

The DMACC men's golf team came away with a seventh-place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Championship May 21 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind. 

The Bears shot a final-round 303, their second-best round of the tournament, for a 72-hole total of 1,217 strokes. DMACC finished two strokes behind sixth-place Tyler Community College (TCC) and 10 strokes behind Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) rival Kirkwood Community College (KCC). 

Parkland College (PC) took the team championship with 1,168 strokes and Cecil Belisle of South Mountain Community College (SMCC) won medalist honors with a 72-hole score of 282. Belisle was six-under-par for the tournament. 

DMACC was led by sophomore Dylan Ellis of Aplington. His final round 73 gave him a 72-hole total of three-over-par 291 and a seventh-place finish, earning All-American honors. Freshman Tyler Sansgaard of Nevada also earned All-American honors with a 14th-place finish. Sansgaard joined Ellis with a 73 in the final round and finished with 285 strokes. 

DMACC sophomore Joe Dean of Cedar Falls finished in a tie for 57th place after shooting a 78 in the final round. He had a 72-hole total of 313.

Sophomores Trevor Heinen of Waterloo and Ryan Leath of Glenwood rounded out DMACC's performance. Heinen played the third and fourth rounds and shot an 80 and 82 for 36-hole score of 163. Leath played the first, second and fourth rounds, shooting 79, 87 and 78 for a 54-hole score of 245.
