DMACC's Angelo Winkel named NJCAA Division II First-Team  All-American
  • Winkel led the Bears to a fifth-place finish in the national championship

Angelo Winkel capped his two-year career at DMACC by being named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II First-Team All-American. The team was announced April 9 by the NJCAA.

 

Winkel, a sophomore from Algona, is the fourth member of the DMACC men's basketball team to have earned Division II First-Team All-American honors since 2002 and he is the 11th DMACC men's basketball player to have earned All-American honors.

 

Other First-Team All-American honors went to Jaden Graves in 2022, Willie Guy in 2021 and Shelton Colwell in 2002. Second-Team All-American honors went to Aarias Austin in 2015, Brandon Nazione in 2014 and Grant Burns in 2008. Tray Buchanan, Nate Mason and Scott Windon earned Third-Team All-American honors in 2019, 2012 and 2009 respectively and Al Stewart, Frashon McGee and Colwell received honorable mention recognition in 2005, 2004 and 2001 respectively.

 

Winkel led the Bears to a fifth-place finish in the NJCAA 2024 Division II Men's Basketball Championship this past season and was named to the all-tournament team. The Bears, who finished with a 32-5 record, also won their fourth Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) regular season title in the past five seasons and Winkel was named to the Region ii All-Region First Team and was the ICCAC Player of the Year.

 

Winkel led DMACC in scoring and rebounding this past season, averaging 16.9 points and 7.1 rebounds a game. He finished second in the ICCAC in scoring and second in field goal percentage, having made 60 percent of his field goal attempts. Winkel collected nine double-doubles during the season and was held to less than 10 points in just two of DMACC's 37 games.

 

Winkel scored 592 points and grabbed 249 rebounds this past season. His 60.3 percent field goal shooting came from 242 field goals in 401 attempts. Winkel was 16-of-64 from three-point range for 25 percent and he made 92 of 140 free throw attempts for 66 percent.

 

Winkel's 249 rebounds included 181 defensive rebounds. His season also included 45 assists, 51 blocked shots and 18 steals.
