DMACC players, head coach earn national tournament honors

The DMACC men's basketball team captured its first-ever National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II men's basketball national championship when the Bears defeated Davidson-Davie Community College (DDCC), 86-75, in the championship game of the NJCAA DII Men's Basketball Championship April 24 at Danville, Ill.

 

Following the game, DMACC players and head coach Brett Putz were honored for their performances in the tournament. Sophomore Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and sophomore Christian Hobbs of Gresham, Wis., was named to the all-tournament team and also received the tournament's sportsmanship award.

 

Sophomores Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., and Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter joined Haffner on the all-tournament team and DMACC head coach Brett Putz was named the tournament Coach of the Year.

 

Guy, who plays point guard, scored 17 points, dished out 12 assists, grabbed five rebounds and added three steals and two turnovers as DMACC opened the tournament with a 90-67 win over Southeast (Neb.) Community College (SECC). He scored 23 points with seven assists, six rebounds, one steal and three turnovers in an 81-75 win over Mott Community College (MCC) in the quarterfinals. Guy scored 15 points and had three assists, five rebounds, two steals and eight turnovers in DMACC's 69-61 win over Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) and scored seven points with 12 assists, four rebounds, four steals and no turnovers as the Bears defeated DDCC in the championship game. Guy's tournament summary is 62 points, 34 assists, 20 rebounds, 10 steals and 13 turnovers in the four games.

 

Haffner scored 12 points and came away with three rebounds, two assists and a steal in the win over SECC. He had just three points and one steal and one assist in the win over MCC and scored 14 points with two rebounds and one assist in the win over ILCC. Haffner saved his best for the championship game when he led the Bears with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 7-of-9 from three-point range, and had one assist.

 

Hobbs scored 17 points and had two rebounds in the win over SECC and tallied 26 points with six rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win over MCC. His 26 points came on 8-of-10 shooting, including 6-of-8 from three-point range. Hobbs scored 15 points and had seven rebounds and two assists against ILCC and came away with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists in the win over DDCC.

 

Schmitt had three double-doubles in tournament play, getting 15 points and 11 rebounds against SECC, 15 points and eight rebounds against MCC, 12 points and 11 rebounds against ILCC and 13 points and 11 rebounds against DDCC.

 

Putz led the Bears to a 21-5 season and the team's second consecutive ICCAC regular season championship in his first season as the head coach. DMACC was ranked first in the NJCACC Division II poll several times during the season, including three consecutive weeks in March.

 

DMACC opened the season with a 75-70 win over then top-ranked Kirkwood Community College (KCC) and put together an eight-game winning streak midway through the season before closing the year with four consecutive victories in the national tournament.
