Five members of the DMACC men's basketball team and head coach Brett Putz have earned postseason recognition from the Iowa Community College Athletic Association (ICCAC) for their accomplishments this season.

 

Sophomores Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids and Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter have been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI All-Region First Team and Guy was named the Player of the Year. Sophomore Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., has earned second team recognition and sophomores Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Penn., and Christian Haffner of Gresham, Wis., received honorable mention recognition. DMACC head coach Brett Putz was named the Region XI Coach of the Year.

 

Guy led DMACC in scoring and assists this season with 275 points and 132 assists. He averaged 12.5 points a game and shot 45 percent from the field, hitting 90 of 202 field goal attempts. Guy was 25-of-56 from three-point range and made 73 of 86 free throw attempts. In addition to his 132 assists, he grabbed 105 rebounds, including 87 defensive rebounds, and led the Bears in steals with 34.

 

Schmitt scored 252 points and averaged 11.5 points a game. He shot 52 percent from the field, making 93 of 179 field goal attempts. Schmitt was 66-of-95 from the free throw line for 70 percent. He also led the Bears in rebounding, averaging 6.4 rebounds a game. He pulled down 140 rebounds, including 101 defensive rebounds, and his season also included 30 assists, 16 steals and 54 blocked shots.

 

Hobbs averaged 11 points a game and was DMACC's second-best three-point shooter, averaging 41.5 percent from beyond the arc. He scored 243 points and shot 41 percent from the field, hitting 76 of 185 field goal attempts. Hobbs made 49 of 118 three-point attempts and was 42-of-55 from the free throw line. His season also included 117 rebounds, including 109 defensive rebounds, 44 assists, 17 steals and seven blocked shots.

 

Bradshaw scored 263 points and averaged 12 points a game. He shot 40 percent from the field, making 92 of 233 field goal attempts. Bradshaw was 31-of-85 from three-point range and 48-of-76 from the free throw line. His season included 84 rebounds, including 75 defensive rebounds, 51 assists, 22 steals and six blocked shots.

 

Haffner scored 264 points on the season and was DMACC's top three-point shooter at 45 percent. He was 83 of 181 from the field for 46 percent and made 61 of 136 three-point attempts. Haffner shot 90 percent from the free throw line, connecting on 37 of 41 attempts. His season also included 61 rebounds, including 52 defensive rebounds, 45 assists, 10 steals and two blocked shots.

 

Putz directed DMACC to a 17-5 season and the Bears' second consecutive ICCAC regular season championship in his first season as head coach. DMACC earned a No. 1 national ranking in the NJCAA Division II men's basketball poll and has qualified for the NJCAA DII Men's Basketball Championship by virtue of their winning the ICCAC regular season championship. The tournament will be played April 20 to 24 in Danville, Ill.
