  • Sophomore Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids leads DMACC with 17 points
  • Loss eliminates Bears from Region XI tournament
  • DMACC still qualifies for NJCAA DII Men's Basketball Championship

Adam Jackson made two free throws with .01 remaining in regulation as Ellsworth Community College (ECC) upset the DMACC men's basketball team, 66-64, in the quarterfinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI basketball tournament April 6 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

DMACC, the Iowa Community College Athletic Association (ICCAC) regular season champion and the No. 3 team in the NJCAA Division II poll, came into the game as the No. 1 seed and ECC was seeded eighth. The Bears had a chance to win the game as they had the ball with the score tied at 64 and 19 seconds left on the clock. But a turnover resulted and sophomore Willie Guy committed a foul with .01 left, sending Jackson to the line.

The Bears let a 10-point lead with less than six minutes remaining slip away and did not make a field goal in the last two and a half minutes of the game.

Guy led DMACC with 17 points and sophomores Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Penn., and Devin Wade-Henderson of Minneapolis, Minn., scored 12 and 10 points respectively.

DMACC, which defeated ECC twice during the regular season, shot 44 percent in losing at home for the third time this season. The Bears were 22-of-50 from the field, 6-of-21 from three-point range and 14-of-26 from the free throw line.

Wade-Henderson had a double double with 10 rebounds as DMACC came away with a 41-31 advantage on the boards. Freshman Goanar Biliew of Denison had seven rebounds and sophomore Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter finished with six. Guy dished out five assists and sophomore Christian Haffner of Gresham, Wis., added four. Guy also led the Bears in steals with two.

The loss eliminated the DMACC men's basketball team from the Region XI tournament, but the Bears will play in the NJCAA DII Men's Basketball Championship April 20 to 24 at Danville, Ill. DMACC qualified for the tournament a year ago but the event was cancelled because of the pandemic. As a result, the Bears were invited to participate in this year's tournament
