Sophomore Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids led four players in double figures with 23 points and nine rebounds as the DMACC men's basketball team closed out the regular season with an 86-84 win over Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) April 3 at Council Bluffs.

 

Sophomore Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Penn., scored 21 points, sophomore Devin Wade-Henderson of Minneapolis, Minn., had 14 and sophomore Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter finished with 12 as the Bears ended the regular season at 17-4 with their second win of the season against the Reivers, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I program.

 

DMACC, ranked third in the NJCAA Division II poll, will take the No.1 seed into the NJCAA Region XI basketball tournament that begins April 6. The Bears will face Ellsworth Community College (ECC) in the quarterfinals inside the DMACC gymnasium. The DMACC-ECC winner will play either IWCC or Southwestern Community College (SWCC) in the semifinals April 8 at the home of the highest seeded team still playing in the tournament. The championship game is set for April 10 and will also be played at the home of the highest seeded team still playing in the tournament.

 

DMACC will also advance to the NJCAA Division II Men's National Championship April 20 to 26 at Danville, Ill., The Bears qualified for the national tournament a year ago but were denied an opportunity to play after the tournament was cancelled because of COVID-19. Should DMACC win this year's Region XI tournament, the runner-up will also advance to the national championship. If the Bears do not win the Region XI tournament, they will still advance to the national championship along with the Region XI winner.

 

DMACC trailed IWCC 38-33 at the half of their game on April 3 but came away with the win on a 53-point second half. The Bears shot 47 percent, hitting 29 of 62 field goal attempts. They were 9-of-16 from three-point range and 19-of-24 from the free throw line.

 

Wade-Henderson's 10 rebounds and Guy's nine lifted DMACC to a 38-27 advantage on the boards. Bradshaw dished out a team-high four assists and Guy came away with three. Schmitt had three blocked shots.

 

DMACC defeated ECC twice during the regular season, winning 74-62 Feb. 6 inside the DMACC gymnasium and taking a 74-66 decision March 13 at Iowa Falls.
