Strong second half propels DMACC to win at Northeast (NE)

Sophomores Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids and Mark Bradshaw of Chester Penn., and freshman Goanar Biliew of Denison scored 13 points apiece as the DMACC men's basketball team used a strong second half to come away with a 78-57 win against Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) March 24 at Norfolk, Neb.

 

Sophomore Christian Haffner of Gresham, Wis., and freshman Preston Thomas of Princeton, Mo., added 11 and 10 points respectively as the Bears rebounded from a two-game losing streak to improve to 14-4 for the season.

 

DMACC, ranked fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, led just 23-19 at intermission but used a strong second half to come away with the win. The Bears began the half with a 17-2 run to open up a 40-21 advantage with just more than 16 minutes remaining and led by as many as 27 points in the final 10 minutes.

 

DMACC shot 44 percent in the win, hitting 30 of 69 field goal attempts. The Bears were 6-of-19 from three-point range and 12-of-20 from the free throw line. Haffner accounted for half of DMACC's three-pointers, going 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

 

Sophomore Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter pulled down 10 rebounds to go with six blocked shots and led the Bears to a 58-31 advantage on the boards. Biliew and freshman Jean Francois of Coral Springs, Fla., had eight rebounds apiece and Guy and sophomore Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., had six apiece. Guy led the Bears in assists with five and Bradshaw paced DMACC in steals with three.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Kirkwood Community College (KCC) March 27 at Cedar Rapids. The Eagles are 12-7 on the season and are ranked 18th in NJCAA Division II. Their losses included a 75-70 upset by DMACC Jan. 20 inside the DMACC gymnasium. KCC was ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II at the time.
