DMACC Men's Basketball team drops 83-73 decision to SECC

The DMACC men's basketball team suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season following an 83-73 loss to Southeastern Community College (SECC) March 20 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The loss comes on the heels of a 72-70 setback against Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) March 17 and sends the Bears to 13-4 for the season.

 

DMACC came into the SECC game ranked first in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I poll for the past three weeks. Both SECC and IHCC are NJCAA Division I programs. IHCC is ranked 11th in Division I and SECC is not ranked but has received votes in the poll.

 

DMACC shot 49 percent in the SECC loss, hitting 26 of 53 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-23 from three-point range and 13-of-18 from the free throw line. Sophomores Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., and Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter led DMACC with 15 points apiece and sophomores Christian Haffner of Gresham, Wis., and Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids added 13 and 12 points respectively.

 

SECC had a 39-25 advantage on the boards with Hobbs grabbing eight rebounds to lead DMACC. Schmitt had five and Guy and sophomore Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Penn., came away with three apiece. Guy and Hobbs dished out five assists apiece and Bradshaw finished with four assists. Guy led DMACC in steals with two.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) March 24 at Norfolk, Neb. NECC is 3-16 this season, including a 102-79 loss to the Bears when the two teams played Feb. 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
