DMACC men's basketball team tops IWCC 80-68 for sixth straight win

Sophomore Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter led five players in double figures with 18 points as the DMACC men's basketball team ran its winning streak to six games behind an 80-68 win over Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) March 6 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Devin Wade-Henderson of Minneapolis, Minn., scored 16 points, sophomore Christian Haffner of Gresham, Wis., had 14 and sophomore Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., and freshman Goanar Biliew of Denison had 12 and 10 points respectively as the Bears improved to 11-2 for the season.

 

DMACC came into the game as the top-ranked team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll.

 

The Bears shot 36 percent in the first half and trailed 36-30 at halftime. They fell behind by as many as 12 points early in the second half before coming back to get the win behind 54 percent field goal shooting. DMACC hit 15 of 28 field goal attempts in the second half, including 6-of-9 from three-point range.

 

For the game, the Bears shot 45 percent, hitting 25 of 56 shots. They were 6-of-16 from three-point range and 24-of-27 from the free throw line.

 

Schmitt and freshman Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids pulled down seven rebounds apiece to lead DMACC to a 31-30 advantage on the boards. Wade-Henderson had five rebounds, Guy dished out seven assists and Schmitt recorded three blocks, including two block assists.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) March 10 at Estherville. The Bears defeated the Lakers 71-62 when the two teams played Jan. 30 inside the DMACC gymnasium. ILCC is 10-4 this season.
