Haffner's 24 points lift DMACC men's basketball team past Southeastern, 82-72

Sophomore Christian Haffner of Gresham, Wis, led four players in double figures with 24 points as the DMACC men's basketball team defeated Southeastern Community College (SECC), 82-72, February 27 at West Burlington.

 

DMACC, ranked fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, recorded its second straight victory over an NJCAA Division I opponent and both wins were on the road. DMACC defeated Indian Hills Community College (IHCC), 75-64, on Feb. 23 at Ottumwa. IHCC is ranked eighth in NJCAA Division I and SECC is not ranked but has received votes in the poll.

 

Sophomore Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., scored 15 points against SECC and sophomores Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids and Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Penn., had 14 points apiece.

 

DMACC trailed 36-32 at halftime but put the win away by outscoring SECC 50-36 in the second half. The Bears shot 46 percent, hitting 25 of 54 field goal attempts. They were particularly effective from three-point range with 15 goals in 23 attempts for 65 percent. Haffner was 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, Hobbs made five of seven attempts and Bradshaw drained three of five attempts. DMACC shot 74 percent from the free throw line, making 17 of 23 attempts.

 

SECC had a 46-29 advantage on the boards with Hobbs pulling downs seven rebounds to lead DMACC. Haffner had six and Bradshaw grabbed five. Guy led the Bears in assists with eight and in steals with four. Hobbs finished with five assists and sophomore Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter and Bradshaw had five and four blocked shots respectively. Schmitt recorded four solo blocks and Bradshaw had four block assists.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Southwestern Community College (SWCC) March 3. Game time is 7 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. SWCC is 6-6, including a 70-58 upset of DMACC Feb. 10 at Creston.
