DMACC men's basketball team tops eighth-ranked Indian Hills Community College for third straight win

Sophomore Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter led four players in double figures with 17 points as the DMACC men's basketball team defeated Indian Hills Community College (IHCC), 75-64, February 23 at Ottumwa, ending the Warriors eight-game winning streak.

 

DMACC, ranked fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, improved to 8-2 with its third consecutive victory. IHCC, an NJCAA Division I program, is ranked eighth nationally.

 

Sophomore Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Penn., followed Schmitt with 16 points, sophomore Christian Haffner of Gresham, Wis., scored 15 and sophomore Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids came away with 11 points.

 

DMACC trailed 36-33 at halftime but outscored the Warriors 42-28 in the second half to get the win. And the Bears did it behind 52 percent field goal shooting from three-point range, including 54 percent in the second half.

 

For the game, DMACC was 24-of-64 from the field for 38 percent and 13-of-16 from the free throw line for 81 percent. The Bears made 14 of 27 three-point attempts. Bradshaw accounted for four in nine attempts, Guy and Haffner each made three three-pointers in five attempts and sophomore Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., was 3-of-6, finishing with nine points.

 

Hobbs pulled down nine rebounds to lead DMACC to a 48-39 advantage on the boards. Schmitt came away with eight rebounds, Bradshaw had seven and Guy finished with six. Guy led the Bears in assists with six, Schmitt and Hobbs had two steals apiece and Schmitt recorded three blocked shots.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will host Marshalltown Community College (MCC) Feb. 25. Game time is 7 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. MCC, an NJCAA Division I program, handed DMACC one of its two losses this season, defeated the Bears 90-88 Jan. 27 at Marshalltown.
