Guy's 18 points lift DMACC men's basketball team past NECC, 102-79

Sophomore Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids led six players in double figures with 18 points as the DMACC men's basketball team improved to 7-2 with a 102-79 win over Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) February 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Penn., scored 15 points, sophomore Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter added 13, sophomore Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., and freshman Preston Thomas of Princeton, Mo., tallied 12 points apiece and sophomore Christian Haffner of Gresham, Wis., came away with 11 in the win.

 

DMACC, ranked fifth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), go 33 points from its reserves with Thomas' 12 points leading the non-starters.

 

NECC kept the game reasonably close in the first half, trailing 41-29 at halftime before DMACC put the game out of reach behind a barrage of three-pointers in the opening minutes of the second half. Hobbs and Haffner hit a pair of three-pointers each and Bradshaw and Guy also connected from beyond the arc as the Bears opened up a 61-41 advantage with 15 minutes, 41 seconds to play. Four minutes later DMACC had a 31-point lead at 75-44 and the Bears led by as many as 35 points in the final minutes.

 

DMACC shot 51 percent, hitting 36 of 70 field goal attempts. The Bears were 10-of-23 from three-point range, including 9-of-17 in the second half, and made 20 of 24 free throw attempts.

 

Schmitt grabbed nine rebounds and Hobbs came away with eight to lead DMACC to a 45-33 advantage on the boards. Freshman KeShawn Christian of Iowa City added seven rebounds and freshman Jean Francois of Coral Springs, Fla., had six.

 

Guy dished out a team-high five assists and Haffner, Bradshaw and sophomore Devin Wade-Henderson of Minneapolis, Minn., had three apiece. Francois led DMACC in steals with two.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team is idle until Feb. 23 when the Bears face Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) at Ottumwa. IHCC, an NJCAA Division I program, is 7-1 and is ranked ninth in NJCAA Division I.
