DMACC men's basketball team survives upset bid by NIACC, 75-74

Sophomore Christian Haffner of Gresham, Wis., scored a game-high 20 points as the DMACC men's basketball team held off upset-minded North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), 75-74, February 13 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears, ranked second nationally in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll and 87-63 winners over the Trojans Jan. 23 at Mason City, improved to 6-2 with the win. It came behind a pair of free throws by sophomore Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids with 39 seconds remaining. The two shots gave the Bears a 75-72 advantage.

 

NIACC, which fell to 0-8 for the season, closed to 75-74 on two free throws by McKleary Robinson with 22 seconds left. Guy was fouled again with 15 seconds to play, but missed both free throw attempts, giving NIACC an opportunity for the win. But the Trojans missed two close-in shots in the final 10 seconds.

 

DMACC, which trailed by eight points early, gained a 19-19 tie on Haffner's three-pointer with 9 minutes, 52 seconds left in the first half. The Bears went on to lead by as many as 15 points before settling for a 45-34 advantage at halftime.

 

NIACC outscored DMACC 22-12 in the first 10:08 of the second half, closing to 57-56 with 9:52 to play. The two teams were never separated by more than three points the rest of the way.

 

Sophomore Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Penn., scored 14 points for DMACC and freshman Jean Francois of Coral Springs, Fla., came away with 11.

 

DMACC shot 47 percent in the win, hitting 28 of 60 field goal attempts. The Bears were 4-of-15 from three-point range and 15-of-25 from the free throw line.


Francois grabbed eight rebounds and sophomore Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., added six as DMACC came away with a 38-35 advantage on the boards. Guy led the Bears in assists with four and in steals with three. Haffner and Hobbs had three assists apiece and Francois blocked five shots, including four solo blocks.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) Feb. 17 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m. NECC is 1-7 this season.
