Second-ranked DMACC men's basketball team upset by SWCC, 70-58

Second-ranked DMACC men's basketball team upset by SWCC, 70-58
  • Cold shooting hampers Bears who make just one of 17 three-point attempts
  • Game is tied at halftime, 27-27, before DMACC is outscored 43-31 in second half
  • Sophomore Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., leads three Bears in double figures with 18 points

A No. 2 national ranking for the DMACC men's basketball team will probably be short lived after the Bears suffered a 70-58 loss to Southwestern Community College (SWCC) February 10 at Creston.

DMACC moved into second place in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll earlier this week. The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Bears, who fell to 5-2.

The Bears forged a 27-27 tie at halftime, but were outscored in the second half, 43-31.

One stat stands out in the loss. DMACC made just one of 17 three-point attempts after coming into the game averaging 43 percent from beyond the arc. Sophomore Zach Hobbs, who led the Bears with 18 points, accounted for the lone three-point basket.

Despite that performance from three-point range, the Bears continue to lead the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) in three-point percentage at 38.5 and are among the national leaders in NJCAA Division II.

Freshman Goanar Biliew of Denison and sophomore Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids joined Hobbs in double figures with 17 and 10 points respectively.
