DMACC men's basketball team overcomes slow start to defeat Ellsworth CC, 74-62

Sophomore Christian Haffner of Gresham, Wis., scored 20 points and sophomores Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter and Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids added 11 and 10 points respectively as the DMACC men's basketball team handed Ellsworth Community College (ECC) a 74-62 loss February 6 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Haffner scored 18 of his 20 points from three-point range, hitting six of nine attempts. Overall, he was 7-of-11 from the field.

 

The Bears improved to 5-1 with their third straight win. They struggled in a low scoring first half, leading just 30-24 at intermission, but managed several double-digit leads in the second half en route to the win. ECC remained winless on the season at 0-6.

 

DMACC shot 49 percent for the game, connecting on 24 of 49 field goal attempts. The Bears were 8-of-17 from three-point range and 18-of-27 from the free throw line.

 

Guy, Haffner, Schmitt and sophomore Devin Wade-Henderson of Minneapolis, Minn., had six rebounds apiece and freshman Goanar Biliew of Denison added five as DMACC finished with a 44-28 advantage on the boards. Guy dished out a team-high nine assists and freshman Preston Thomas of Princeton, Mo., topped the Bears in steals with three.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Feb. 10 at Creston. The Spartans bring a 3-3 record into the game.
