Bears Knock Off #11 NIACC on the Road
  • Sophomore Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., scored a game-high 24 points, including going 5 for 6 from three-point range, to lead the Bears to victory.

The DMACC men's basketball team, ranked 15th in the nation according to the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NCJAA) Division II poll, took a 20-point lead into halftime en route to notching an 87-63 win over North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) on Sat., Jan. 23rd, in Mason City.

Sophomore Zach Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz., led the Bears with 24 points, which included going 6 for 8 from the field, 5 of 6 from three-point range and connecting on all seven of his free throw attempts. He also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and had two assists.

In other scoring for DMACC, Gresham, Wisc., sophomore Christian Haffner had 14 points, Mark Bradshaw of Chester, Pa., added 12 points, and sophomores Willie Guy of Cedar Rapids and Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter scored 8 points each, followed by Goanar Biliew of Denison and Jean Francois of Coral Springs, Fla.,with 7 points each, Devin Wade Henderson of Minneapolis with 5 points and Preston Thomas of Princeton, Mo., and Malachi Peasley of Panora each adding one point.

Hobbs lead the Bears with 8 rebounds, followed by seven from Schmitt and Francois, and five each from Wade Henderson and Biliew. The Bears took a 49-29 lead into halftime. For the game, DMACC was 10 for 20 from the three-point line for 50 percent, and made 44 percent of their field goal attempts and 73 percent from the free throw line. The Bears outrebounded NIACC 45 to 28 in the game.

The Bears are now 2-0 on the season and travel to Marshalltown to play Marshalltown Community College (1-1) on Wed., Jan. 27th. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
