#15 DMACC MEN TEAM DEFEATS TOP RANKED KIRKWOOD
  • This is a signature win for Men's Head Basketball Coach Brett Putz in his debut at DMACC.
  • Sophomore Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter leads the Bears in scoring with 20 and rebounds with 9 in the first game of the season.
  • The DMACC Bears have balanced scoring with five players in double figures leading to the victory.

The DMACC Bears, ranked 15th in the nation according to the latest National Junior College Athletic Association Division II poll, defeated the number one ranked team, the Kirkwood Community College Eagles 75-70 January 20 at home.

DMACC sophomore Ryan Schmitt of Van Meter led the Bears with 20 points, including five of eight from the field and 10 for 11 from the free throw line.  Freshman Goanar Biliew of Denison added 13 points, followed by 11 points from sophomore Zach Hobbs of Mesa, AZ and 10 each from sophomore Willie Guy from Cedar Rapids and sophomore Mark Bradshaw from Chester, PA.

Schmitt led the Bears with nine rebounds followed by eight rebounds from Guy. 

 

In addition, Guy had a team-high 11 assists, putting him just two rebounds shy of a triple double.  

DMACC took at 28-22 lead into halftime, increased the lead to 13 points in the second half over the number one team in the nation and held on to win the season opener. 

Both teams connected on 25 of 57 field goals for 44 percent. DMACC made 19 of 22 free throws for 86 percent and committed only 13 turnovers compared to 21 turnovers by Kirkwood. 

This marked the debut of first-year DMACC Men's Basketball Head Coach Brett Putz. 

DMACC (1-0) travels to Mason City for a 3 p.m. tipoff on Saturday, January 23rd against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC).  NIACC (0-1) lost their season opener to Iowa Central Community College 75-64.
