Higgins Leads DMACC Men's Basketball Team Past Simpson JV, 90-45

Sophomore Lee Higgins of Chicago, Ill., scored 23 points and led five players in double figures as the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team handed the Simpson College junior varsity a 90-45 loss February 6 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Wali Parks of Iowa City finished with 15 points, freshman Brandon Lawani of Bolingbrook, Ill., had 14 points and sophomore Antowine Locke of Bolingbrook, Ill., and freshman Elijah Ward of Joliet, Ill., scored 10 points apiece as the Bears improved to 16-7 for the season.

 

DMACC made 21 of 42 field goal attempts in the first half, including 6-of-14 from three-point range, in taking control of the game. The Bears led 53-19 at halftime and were never seriously challenged in the second half. For the game, DMACC was 33-of-77 from the field for 43 percent. The Bears made seven of 25 three-point attempts and were 17-of-32 from the free throw line.

 

Freshman Devonta Prince of Brooklyn Center, Minn., pulled down 12 rebounds and Ward and freshman Andrew Madison of Grand Rapids, Mich., had 10 rebounds apiece as DMACC came away with a 65-31 advantage on the boards. Higgins led the Bears in assists with five and Parks finished with four. Madison and freshman Louis Psihoyos of Dubuque topped DMACC in steals with three apiece.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play Feb. 10 when the Bears host Ellsworth Community College (ECC). Game time is 3 p.m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. DMACC is 2-4 in league play and ECC is 12-10 overall and 1-5 in the conference. The Bears overcame a 34-28 halftime deficit with an 81-79 win when the two teams faced with other Jan. 13 at Iowa Falls.
