DMACC Men's Basketball Team Tops Mount Mercy JV, 81-70

Freshman Devonta Prince of Brooklyn Center, Minn., scored 17 points to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men's basketball team to an 81-70 win over the Mount Mercy University junior varsity (MMUJV) January 9 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Nysir Marshburn of Philadelphia, Penn., tallied 14 points and freshmen DeShawn Davidson of Waukegan, Ill., and Ray Miller of Davenport came away with 13 and 10 points respectively as the Bears improved to 13-3 with their third consecutive victory.

 

DMACC, ranked 14th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), used a 17-4 run in the last 7 minutes, 16 seconds of the first half to open up a 39-26 advantage at halftime and led by double digits for most of the second half. MMUJV closed to within seven points at 64-57 with less than five minutes to play but got no closer.

 

The Bears shot 52 percent in the win, connecting on 34 of 65 field goal attempts, including 17-of-27 in the second half. They made three of 15 three-point attempts and were 10-of-17 from the free throw line.

 

Freshman Andrew Madison of Grand Rapids, Mich., grabbed 10 rebounds to lead DMACC to a 46-27 advantage on the boards. Prince had seven rebounds and Marshburn and freshman Elijah Ward of Joliet, Ill., came away with six apiece. Sophomore Wali Parks of Iowa City topped the Bears in assists with four and Marshburn and Davidson dished out three apiece. Davidson also paced DMACC in steals with three.

 

DMACC begins play in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Jan. 13 when the Bears face Ellsworth Community College (ECC) at Iowa Falls. ECC is 10-4 on the season.
