DMACC baseball team takes two of three games against ECC
  • Ellsworth CC takes the opener on April 13, 7-6
  • DMACC wins the nightcap, 17-7
  • Bears win a single game on April 14, 11-1

 

The DMACC baseball team ran its record to 21-17 overall and 9-9 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after winning two of three games against Ellsworth Community College (ECC) April 13 and 14 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

ECC won the first game of a doubleheader on April 13, 7-6. DMACC took the second game, 17-7, and won a single game on April 14, 17-1.

 

ECC scored two runs in the first, one in the second and two each in the third and fifth innings in winning the opener on April 13. DMACC scored three runs in the bottom of the second and two in the third to gain a 5-5 tie before ECC took a 7-5 with its runs in the fifth. DMACC made it a 7-6 game with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Sophomores Cael Boever of Sioux City and Maddox Johnston of Chanhassen, Minn., and freshman Sam Hesselmann of Johnston led DMACC with two hits apiece including doubles from Boever and Johnston.

 

Hesselmann singled home a run in in the second and Johnston had an RBI double. The Bears got their third run of the inning when sophomore Jaylen Ziegler of Urbandale walked and scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Kannon Coakley of Maquoketa hit a two-run home run in the third and the Bears made it a 7-6 game when Boever doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Jackson Manning of Keosauqua in the sixth.

Sophomore Ty Madison of Omaha, Neb., pitched the first four and a third innings for DMACC and fell to 4-3 with the loss. He allowed seven runs on 12 hits and struck out three. Sophomore Jake Porter of Winterset went two-thirds of an inning, striking out one batter and walking one and sophomore Jacob Sjuts of Humphrey, Neb., threw two innings. He allowed one hit and struck out three.

 

Sophomore Dillon Kuehl of Urbandale belted two home runs and Boever and sophomore Cory Bantam of Woodbine hit one apiece in DMACC's win in the second game.

 

The Bears scored four runs in the first, three in the third, two in the fourth and four each in the seventh and eighth innings. ECC got a single run in the second, two in the third, three in the sixth and one in the seventh.

 

Boever and Bantam led DMACC at the plate with three hits apiece and Bantam had five RBIs with Kuehl getting four, Boever getting three and Johnston coming away with two. Bantam had a double to go with his home run. Manning also doubled and Johnston hit a triple.

 

Sophomore J.R. Dermody of Council Bluffs pitched the first four innings for DMACC, allowing three runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked five. Sophomore Vinny Mauro of Norwalk went two innings, allowing three runs on five hits and freshman Konner Entz of West Fargo, N.D., threw a third of an inning and gave up one run with one strikeout. Sophomore Alex Berends of Story City notched the win in his first decision of the season. He allowed two hits, struck out one and walked one.

 

Sophomore Chance Key of Waverly allowed one run on four hits and struck out five in winning the single game on April 14. He improved to 5-0 with the win.

 

Ziegler, Kuehl, and sophomore Noah Thein of Dewitt led the Bears at the plate with two hits apiece, including a double by Ziegler and a triple from Kuehl. Ziegler, Kuehl, Bantam and Hesselmann drove in two runs apiece.

 

DMACC took a 5-0 lead in the first and scored twonruns in the second, one in the fourth and three in the fifth. ECC tallied its lone run in the top of the second.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) in a single game on April 17. NECC is 27-16 overall and 14-6 in the ICCAC. The two teams split a doubleheader April 4 at Norfolk, Neb., DMACC won the opener, 5-3, and NECC took the nightcap, 6-5.
