Losses in Region XI tournament end season for DMACC baseball team

The season ended for the DMACC baseball team following a pair of losses May 14 and 15 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Baseball Tournament at Cedar Rapids.

 

The Bears suffered a 13-4 loss to Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in their tournament opener on May 14 and Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) handed DMACC a 6-0 loss in an elimination game on May 15.

 

The Bears ended play at 23-38.

 

DMACC let a 2-0 lead slip away in losing to KCC. The Bears scored a run in the first and another in the third for their two-run lead, but KCC responded with three runs in the bottom of the third and another run in the bottom of the fourth for a 4-2 lead. The Bears tied it at 4-4 with two runs in the top of the sixth, but KCC pulled away with four runs in the bottom of the inning and five in the bottom of the seventh when the game was called because of the mercy rule.

 

Freshman Cadyn Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., paced DMACC's five-hit attack with a pair of singles and freshman Jackson Fisher of Chariton, Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., and Jake Thilges of Johnston had one hit apiece, include a triple by Nippolt. Fisher, Nippolt and Thilges drove in one run apiece.

Freshman Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter pitched the first five and a third innings for the Bears and fell to 4-3 with the loss. He allowed six runs on eight hits, struck out eight and walked one. Freshman Cade Van Ness of Glenwood went one inning, allowing five runs on four hits with one strikeout and three walks and freshman Blake Grevengoed of West Des Moines allowed two runs on two hits but was not credited with any innings pitched.

 

NECC's Jeremy Schneider limited DMACC to just one hit in helping the Hawks to their 6-0 win on May 15. NECC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, led 3-0 after four innings and scored its final three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

 

DMACC's lone hit was a single by freshman Brett Berg of West Des Moines.

 

Freshman Jacob Draeger of Johnston pitched the first five innings for the Bears, allowing three runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked one. Freshman Bret Price of Boone pitched two and two-thirds innings before being forced to leave the game after being hit by a line drive. His injury did not appear to be serious. Price allowed three runs on six hits and walked one batter. Freshman Jacob Norris of North Liberty went a third of an inning and retired the only batter he faced.
