DMACC baseball team takes 1-0 lead in best of three series against SECC

Freshmen Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., and Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., drove in one run apiece and freshmen Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter and Kaleb Krier of Altoona combined on a two-hitter as the DMACC baseball team defeated Southeastern Community College (SECC), 2-1 in the first game of a best-of-three series May 8 at Burlington.

 

The series continues at 1 p.m. today and a second game, if necessary, will follow the first game. The series winner advances to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Four-Team Double Elimination Tournament May 14 to 16 at Cedar Rapids.

 

DMACC, which improved to 22-35 with the win, took a 1-0 lead against SECC with a run in the top of the third. The Black Hawks, who won three of four games against the Bears during the regular season, tied it in the bottom of the seventh and the Bears answered with a run in the top of the eighth to come away with the win.

 

Freshmen Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., and Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., drove in one run apiece to lead the DMACC offensively. Freshmen Brett Berg of West Des Moines and Jayden Singleton of Des Moines had two hits apiece and Singleton and freshman Jadyn Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., scored the DMACC runs.

 

Freshman Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter pitched the first seven innings, allowing one run on one hit. He struck out two and walked two. Freshman Kaleb Krier of Altoona pitched two scoreless innings and earned his first save of the season. He allowed one hit, struck out three and walked two.
