DMACC baseball team closes regular season with doubleheader loss to NECC

The DMACC baseball team closed the regular season with a doubleheader loss to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) May 5 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

NECC came away with a 3-1 win in the opener and a 10-6 decision in the second game as DMACC ended the regular season at 21-35 overall and 17-27 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

NECC won the opener behind two runs in the top of the first and another run in the top of the sixth. DMACC scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth, compliments of an RBI single by freshman Cadyn Schwabe of Thompson, N.D.

 

The Bears were limited to six hits in the game. Freshman Jackson Fisher of Chariton doubled and freshmen Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., Brett Berg of West Des Moines, Jayden Singleton of Des Moines and Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., joined Schwabe with singles.

 

Freshman Nick Crandell of Johnston pitched the first six innings and fell to 1-5 with the loss. He allowed three runs on six hits, struck out four and walked one. Freshman Bret Price of Boone went one inning and allowed one hit.

 

NECC had a 5-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fifth in the second game, but DMACC made it a 5-4 game with four runs in the bottom of the inning. NECC used a three-run rally in the top of the eighth to open up an 8-4 advantage before two DMACC runs in the bottom of the inning got the Bears to within 8-6. NECC then scored twice in the top of the ninth and held DMACC scoreless in the bottom of the inning to come away with the win.

 

Berg led the Bears with a pair of home runs and three RBIs. Schwabe also homered and drove in two runs and Fisher had three hits, including a double.

 

Freshman Ben Dixon of Sioux City pitched the first four innings for DMACC and fell to 1-4 with the loss. He allowed three runs on two hits, struck out one and walked one. Freshman Blake Grevengoed of West Des Moines threw two-thirds of an inning and allowed two runs on one hit. He struck out two and walked two. Freshman Jacob Norris of North Liberty went a third of an inning and struck out one of the two batters he faced, and freshman Wil Casel of Ankeny went two innings, allowing three runs on two hits. He struck out four and walked one. Freshman Cade Van Ness of Glenwood threw one hitless inning and freshman Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., went one inning, allowing two runs on three hits

 

The DMACC baseball team will play in the Region XI Baseball Tournament May 8 and 9. Pairings and tournament locations will be announced when they become available.
