Bears drop doubleheader to Northeast

The DMACC baseball team concluded a four-game road trip April 28th with a pair of losses to Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NECC) at Norfolk, Neb. 

The Hawks won by scores of 6-5 and 11-4, dropping DMACC to 20-30 overall and 16-22 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). 

NECC scored five runs in the second inning and one in the third and limited DMACC to a five-run third inning in winning the first game. 

Freshmen Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., and Kyle Westhoff of West Des Moines led the Bears with two hits apiece and Westhoff came away with a pair of RBIs. Freshmen Jackson Fisher of Chariton, Jayden Singleton of Des Moines and Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., drove in one run apiece. Mungin accounted for the Bears' only extra base hit with a double. 

Freshman Nick Crandell of Johnston pitched all six innings for DMACC and fell to 0-1 with the loss. He allowed six runs on nine hits, struck out one and walked two. 

NECC scored three runs in the first, three in the second, three in the fifth and two in the eighth to come away with the win in the second game. DMACC got one run in each of the first and third innings and two runs in the fifth. 

Freshmen Jake Thilges of Johnston and Kaleb Harrison of Neola keyed DMACC's five-hit attack with two hits apiece and Nicolino contributed a double. Singleton drove in two runs and Thilges and Nicolino had one RBI apiece. 

Freshman Ben Dixon of Sioux City pitched an inning and a third and fell to 0-1 with the loss. He allowed five runs on four hits and walked two batters. Freshman Wil Casel of Ankeny went two and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on one hit. He walked one batter and struck out one. Freshman Blake Grevengoed of West Des Moines pitched a third of an inning and allowed one run on one hit and freshman Jacob Norris of North Liberty gave up two runs on one hit in three innings on the mound. He struck out one batter and walked three. Freshman Skout Lave of Ozark, Mo., went two-thirds of an inning and struck out one of the two batters he faced. 

The DMACC baseball team will play doubleheaders against Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) May 1st and nd at Centerville. IHCC is 30-11 overall and 25-11 in the ICCAC.
