DMACC baseball team loses four-game series to Iowa Western, 3-1

The DMACC baseball team fell to 18-28 overall and 14-20 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after losing three of four games to Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) April 24 and 25 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

The two teams split a doubleheader on April 24 with IWCC taking the opener, 12-0, and DMACC winning the nightcap, 7-0. IWCC won by scores of 6-2 and 8-6 on April 25.

 

DMACC collected just three hits, a pair of singles from freshman Sam Nicolino of Des Moines and another by freshman Jackson Fisher of Chariton in losing the opener on April 24.

 

IWCC got the win behind four runs in the first, three in the second, four in the third and one in the fifth. The game was called because of the mercy rule after six innings.

 

Freshman Jacob Draeger of Johnston pitched the first three innings for the Bears and fell to 1-5 with the loss. He allowed 11 runs on 11 hits, struck out three and walked two. Freshman Wil Casel of Ankeny threw two innings, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out two and walked one.

 

Freshman Kyle Westhoff of West Des Moines had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs to lead DMACC to a 7-0 win in the second game. The Bears took a 4-0 lead in the first, added another run in the fourth and closed out the win with two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

 

Freshman Cadyn Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., had two triples and an RBI in the win and freshmen Jayden Singleton of Des Moines and Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., joined Westhoff with one double apiece.

 

Freshman Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter improved to 3-2 with the win. He pitched seven innings, allowing four hits, striking out seven and walking six. Freshman Skout Lave of Ozark, Mo., threw two hitless innings. He struck out one and walked two.

 

Hits were again hard to come by in the opener on April 25 as the Bears had just four singles in a 6-2 loss. IWCC led 2-1 after four innings and put three runs on the board in the fifth and one in the sixth. DMACC tallied single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

 

Westhoff, Singleton and freshmen Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., and Kaleb Harrison of Neola singled for DMACC and Harrison drove in a run.

 

Freshman Hayden Thompson of Maple Grove, Minn., pitched the first three innings for DMACC, allowing two runs on no hits. He walked three batters and fell to 3-4 with the loss. Freshman Cole Kaufman of Waukee went an inning and a third, allowing two runs on one hit and walking one batter and freshman Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., allowed one run on one hit, struck out one batter and walked one in an inning and a third. Freshman Blake Grevengoed of West Des Moines threw two hitless innings but gave up one run. He struck out one and walked one.

 

DMACC used a five-run sixth inning to open up a 6-1 lead in the final game of the series, but IWCC got the win with four runs in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth.

 

Westhoff led the Bears at the plate with two singles and four RBIs and Harrison and freshman Donovan Weaver of Davenport had two hits apiece. Schwabe and Nippolt each doubled and Nippolt and Harrison had one RBI apiece.

 

Freshman Cade Van Ness of Glenwood pitched the first six innings for the Bears, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked one. Freshman Jacob Norris of North Liberty threw one inning and allowed one run on three hits and walked one batter and freshman Bret Price of Boone allowed two runs on one hit and walked one batter in one inning on the mound. Casel also went an inning, giving up one hit and striking out one batter.

 

The DMACC baseball team will play a doubleheader against Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) April 27 at Estherville. ILCC is 5-39 overall and 2-30 in the ICCAC. The Lakers dropped a doubleheader to DMACC March 24 at the DMACC baseball diamond, losing by scores of 12-0 and 8-7.
