DMACC baseball team splits doubleheader with SWCC

The DMACC baseball team split a doubleheader with Southwestern Community College (SWCC) April 22 at Creston, losing the opener, 10-4, and winning the nightcap, 10-0.

 

The split gives the Bears a 17-25 overall record and a 13-17 record in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCA).

 

Freshman Sam Nicolino of Des Moines hit a home run and drove in two runs to highlight DMACC's performance in the opener. SWCC led 4-1 after the first inning and 4-2 after two innings. The Spartans got the win behind two runs in the third, two in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. DMACC tallied its other two runs in the top of the seventh.

 

Nicolino was the only DMACC player with more than one hit in the game. Freshman Kaleb Harrison of Council Bluffs hit a double and drove in a run and freshman Cadyn Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., also drove in a run.

 

Freshman Ben Dixon of Sioux City pitched the first two innings for the Bears and fell to 1-2 with the loss. He allowed six runs on seven hits, struck out three and walked one. Freshman Bret Price of Boone went two and a third innings, allowing three runs on four hits. He struck out two and walked one. Freshman Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., threw an inning and two-thirds, giving up one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked one.

 

Freshmen Jackson Fisher of Chariton and Jake Thilges of Johnston belted home runs and drove in three runs apiece to lift DMACC to the win in the second game. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first, scored seven runs in the second, four in the third and put the game away with two runs in the seventh.

 

Thilges had three hits in the game and Fisher and freshman Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., had two hits apiece. Schwabe, freshman Jayden Singleton of Des Moines and freshman Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., each doubled and Schwabe and freshman Kyle Westhoff of West Des Moines drove in two runs apiece.

 

Freshman Kevin Krier of Altoona pitched all seven innings and ran his record to 5-2 with the win. He gave up five hits, struck out 11 and walked one.

 

The DMACC baseball team will play doubleheaders against Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) April 24 and 25 at the DMACC baseball diamond. The Reivers are 36-7 overall and lead the ICCAC with a 27-3 record.
