DMACC baseball team splits doubleheader with Southwestern

Freshman Cadyn Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., had three hits, including a triple and a home run, and drove in three runs to lead the DMACC baseball team to a 12-2 win over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) in the second game of a doubleheader April 14 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

SWCC won the opener, 8-5.

 

The split gives the Bears a 15-21 overall record and an 11-13 mark in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC came away with the win in the second game behind an eight-run seventh inning. The two teams were tied 1-1 after the first inning and the Bears took the lead for good with two runs in the second. Both team scored one run each in the fourth, giving DMACC took a 4-2 lead into the seventh.

 

Freshmen Jake Thilges of Johnston and Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., had two hits apiece in the win and Mungin joined Schwabe with three RBIs. Thilges drove in two runs. Freshman Sam Nicolino of Des Moines had a triple for the Bears and freshman Jayden Singleton of Des Moines doubled.

 

Freshman Kaleb Krier of Altoona threw all seven innings and improved to 4-2 with the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked two.

 

SWCC used a six-run rally in the sixth inning to get the win in the opener. The Spartans led 2-0 after the first inning, 2-1 after five innings and opened up an 8-1 advantage with their rally in the sixth. DMACC scored its other four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Freshman Jackson Fisher of Chariton had two singles in the loss and freshman Kaleb Harrison of Neola belted a home run and drove in two runs. Schwabe and freshman Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., had doubles for the Bears.

 

Freshman Ben Dixon of Sioux City pitched the first four innings for DMACC and fell to 1-1 with the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits, struck out two and walked two. Freshmen Skout Lave of Ozark, Mo., Bret Price of Boone and Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., each threw one inning. Lave allowed two runs on one hit, struck out two and walked two and Price gave up four runs on three hits and walked one batter. Ryun recorded one strikeout in his one inning on the mound.

 

The DMACC baseball team will play doubleheaders against Ellsworth Community College (ECC) April 17 and 18 at Iowa Falls. The Panthers are 13-25 this season and have a 6-20 record in the ICCAC.
