DMACC baseball team drops three of four games to Iowa Central

Freshman Cadyn Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., had three hits and drove in two runs and freshman Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., singled Schwabe home with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the DMACC baseball team avoided a four-game sweep by Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) with a 9-8 win in the second game of a doubleheader April 10 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

ICCC took three of the four games, winning 4-2 and 9-3 on April 10 and taking the opener on April 11, 5-1.

 

DMACC fell to 14-20 overall and 10-12 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

The Bears let a 5-1 lead get away before getting their win in the second game on April 10. They acquired that lead with four runs in the bottom of the third and one in the bottom of the fourth. ICCC scored six runs in the top of the fourth for a 7-5 advantage and DMACC tied it with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Both teams scored once in the eighth before DMACC got the win in the ninth.

 

In addition to Schwabe's three hits, which included a double, freshmen Jackson Fisher of Chariton, Jake Thilges of Johnston, Jayden Singleton of Des Moines and Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., had two hits apiece, including a double by Singleton and a triple from Fisher. Thilges joined Schwabe with two RBIs and Nippolt, freshman San Nicolino of Des Moines and Mungin drove in one run apiece.

 

Freshman Nick Crandell of Johnston pitched the first five and two-thirds innings for DMACC, allowing seven runs on 10 hits. He struck out two and walked one. Freshman Jacob Norris of North Liberty threw two innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out three batters and freshman Cole Kaufman of Waukee went a third of an inning, retiring the only batter he faced. Freshman Blake Grevengoed of West Des Moines got his first decision of the season in one inning on the mound. He allowed one hit, struck out one and walked one.

 

ICCC began the series with its win in the opener on April 9. The Tritons scored two runs in each of the third and fourth innings for a 4-0 lead and DMACC made it close with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

 

Fisher paced DMACC's six-hit attack with a pair of singles and freshman Kaleb Harrison of Neola drove in both DMACC runs.

 

Freshman Jacob Draeger of Johnston pitched five innings and fell to 1-4 with the loss. He allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked two. Freshman Bret Price of Boone went two innings and surrendered one hit.

 

DMACC led 1-0 after five innings in the second game on April 9, but ICCC answered with two runs in the sixth, three each in the seventh and eighth innings and another run in the ninth to come away with the win. DMACC tallied its final two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

 

The Bears were limited to four hits, a single and a home run from Schwabe and singles by Fisher and freshman Nolan Kelliher of Middleton, Wis., Schwabe drove in two runs and Fisher came away with an RBI.

 

Freshman Anthony Potthoff of Van Meter slipped to 2-2 with the loss. He went six and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on five hits with two strikeouts and five walks. Freshman Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., allowed three runs and walked two batters in a third of an inning and freshman Ben Dixon of Sioux City surrendered one hit in one inning on the mound. Kaufman also threw one inning, allowing one run on one hit.

 

ICCC used three runs on the third and one each in the sixth and seventh to win the opener on April 10. DMACC was held to three hits, singles by Schwabe, Harrison and Mungin and Mungin drove in the lone DMACC run in the bottom of the seventh.

 

Freshman Hayden Thomsen of Maple Grove, Minn., suffered the loss, his third of the season against two wins. He went five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Price went two innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Southwestern Community College (SWCC) in a doubleheader April 14 at the DMACC baseball diamond. SWCC is 10-25 overall and 9-13 in the ICCAC.
