DMACC baseball team takes two from Iowa Lakes

Freshman Kevin Krier of Altoona tossed a two-hitter and freshman Kaleb Harrison of Neola hit two doubles and drove in five runs as the DMACC baseball team defeated Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC), 12-0, in the first game of a doubleheader March 24 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

Freshman Jake Thilges of Johnston had a double and a triple and collected five RBIs as the Bears held off ILCC to take the second game, 8-7.

 

With the wins, DMACC improved to 7-11 overall and 3-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

Krier improved to 2-2 with his win in the opener. He faced just 17 batters in the five-inning game, striking out six and walking one. The game was called because of the 10-run mercy rule after ILCC batted in the top of the fifth.

 

DMACC took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and padded its lead with two runs in the second and six in the third.

 

Harrison and freshman Kyle Westhoff of West Des Moines paced DMACC at the plate with two hits apiece. Harrison hit a pair of doubles and drove in five runs and Westhoff singled twice and drove in two runs. The Bears also got a double from freshman Jake Thilges of Johnston and a triple from freshman Carter Bornemeier of Elmwood, Neb. Bornemeier and freshmen Cadyn Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., and Ben Nippolt of St. Paul, Minn., drove in one run apiece.

 

Thilges had three hits, including a double and a triple and drove in five runs for DMACC in the second game. The Bears led 2-1 after three innings and went ahead 8-1 with three runs in the fifth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth. ILCC made it close with a six-run rally in the top of the ninth.

 

Bornemeier, Nippolt and freshman Tre Mungin of Omaha, Neb., had two hits apiece and Harrison, Mungin and freshman Jackson Fisher of Chariton drove in one run apiece.

 

Freshman Jarrett Novak of Gretna, Neb., pitched the first six innings for the Bears and improved to 1-1 with the win. He allowed one run on three hits, struck out seven and walked three. Freshman Ben Dixon of Sioux City went two and a third innings, allowing two runs on two hits with four strikeouts and freshman Cole Kaufman of Waukee allowed four runs on three hits in a third of an inning. He walked one batter. Freshman Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., picked up his first save in a third of an inning on the mound. He faced two batters and gave up one hit.

 

The DMACC baseball team will play North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in doubleheaders March 27 and 28 at Mason City. The Trojans are 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the ICCAC.
