DMACC baseball team edges NCTC for third straight win

Freshman Jackson Fisher of Chariton opened the top of the 10th inning with a base hit, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Kyle Westhoff of West Des Moines, took third on an infield grounder by freshman Jake Thilges of Johnston and then scored on an error as the DMACC baseball team defeated North Central Texas College (NOCT), 8-7, February 23 at Gainesville, Texas.

 

The win was the third straight for the Bears who improved to 3-2 for the season.

 

DMACC led 2-1 after the first inning but fell behind 5-2 when NCTC scored four times in the bottom of the sixth. The Bears made it a 5-4 game with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and NCTC scored in the bottom of the inning for a 6-4 advantage. Thilges belted a three-run home run in the top of the eighth, giving DMACC a 7-6 advantage and NCTC tied it in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extra innings.

 

Fisher paced the Bears' seven-hit attack with three hits, including a double. Thilges, freshman Cadyn Schwabe of Thompson, N.D., Westhoff and freshman Bennett Cutsforth of Dubuque had one hit apiece, including a double by Cutsforth.

 

Thilges came away with three runs batted in and Fisher, Westhoff and sophomore Kaleb Harrison of Neola drove in one run apiece.

 

Freshman Nick Crandell of Johnston got the start for DMACC and went five and a third innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked one batter. Freshman Wil Casel of Ankeny went two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on one hit. He struck out one and walked one. Freshman Cade Van Ness of Glenwood threw two innings, allowing a run on three hits and striking out three batters and freshman Greg Ryun of Victoria, Minn., allowed one run on two hits in two innings on the mound. He struck out three, walked one and was credited with the win.

 

The DMACC baseball team will play Northern Oklahoma College-Enid (NOCE) Feb. 25 at Enid, Okla. The two teams will play a single game on Feb. 26 and will play a doubleheader on Feb 27, all at Enid, Okla. DMACC will play a doubleheader against Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa (NOCT) Feb. 28 at Tonkawa, Okla. NOCT handed the Bears their two losses when the Mavericks swept a doubleheader Feb. 5 at Tonkawa, Okla.
